Fiverr, the globally renowned freelancing platform, has recently disabled the accounts of numerous Pakistani freelancers. On Tuesday, social media was abuzz with Pakistani users sharing screenshots of Fiverr notifications that informed freelancers about the deactivation of their gigs.

In one viral screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, Fiverr informed Pakistani freelancers that their accounts were temporarily disabled due to internet service disruptions in the country. Fiverr’s message assured freelancers that this action was taken to protect their ratings from being affected by delays in completing orders caused by these disruptions.

The freelancing sector in Pakistan is a significant contributor to the nation’s economy, bringing in precious foreign exchange. With over 2.3 million freelancers, Pakistan is the fourth largest freelancing community globally, collectively earning more than $500 million annually. Freelancers on platforms like Fiverr provide diverse services to clients worldwide, driving economic growth and showcasing Pakistani talent on a global stage.

However, the disabling of gigs due to internet outages highlights the persistent challenges faced by freelancers in Pakistan. Internet service disruptions not only hinder the timely completion of projects but also jeopardize the reputation and income of freelancers. Frequent outages and slow speeds force clients to seek services from other countries, further straining the livelihoods of Pakistani freelancers.

Critics argue that the government needs to adopt more supportive policies to bolster the freelancing sector. The lack of stable internet services and a reliable infrastructure significantly hampers the potential of Pakistani freelancers. While the government struggles to provide adequate employment opportunities, it should at least ensure that freelancers can maintain their hard-earned clients without interruption.

The current situation serves as a wake-up call for policymakers to address the fundamental issues impacting the digital economy. Ensuring stable internet services and fostering an environment conducive to freelancing will not only support individual livelihoods but also enhance Pakistan’s position in the global freelancing market.
